Not Your Grandpa's Long Johns

From left: Timoteo, Nasty Pig, 2(x)ist.

With the snow falling down hard outside my window this morning, I thought what better day to pull out the long johns.  Long johns have really come a long way from what they used to be.  They're no longer the fugly, thermal white things that you're grandpa used to wear.  The long johns of today are stylish and you'll want to wear them.  They're form fitting and sleek, but still keep you warm thanks to performance fabrics.  So today I thought why not do a quick round up of some great long johns on the market this season.  Here they are:

  • The Timoteo Sport 2.0 - comes in blue, white, and black.  This form fitting style has contrast stitching and pouch for an added flair.  They're sure to keep you warm as well as show off your assets with a rear seam and pouch stitching.  $36
  • Nasty Pig - comes in red, black, and white.  These are a looser fit that is a throw-back to the older styles, but still style conscious and forward.  They have a snap fly for style (it doesn't open) that sure looks sexy and intriguing.  $39 at Jockstrap Central.
  • 2(x)ist Tartan long john - comes in black, white, and red.  This low-rise long john has a tailored fit down through the ankles, perfect to wear under your skinny jeans.  They have some style with the tartan waistband.  Functioning on pouch fly.  Normally $34, currently on sale for $25.50 from 2(x)ist.

It's Getting Cold Outside

It's getting to be that time of year again when a skimpy little thong just isn't going to cut it -- it's just too cold (although heated seats do help). But if you just can't give them up, maybe it's time to add another layer.  That's right guys, I'm talking about long johns.  I used to shudder at the thought of them; but like the rest of the men's underwear world, long johns have really come a long way with much more streamlined, stylish designs.

So here's some hot eye candy from Jockstrap Central of the new Nasty Pig long johns.  They come in black, white, and red and retail for $39 a piece (which is pretty competitive for "designer" long johns).  I really love how fitted these are and how beautifully they accentuate those rears.  Yum.  Enjoy!

Great Deals on 2(x)ist at GILT

Once again, 2(x)ist is available today on GILT.  If you're not familiar with the site, it's a place where you can get designer clothing for super discounted prices.  But you have to be a member to take advantage of the sales.  If you aren't already a member, it's free and you can sign up using my exclusive invite link (not just anyone can sign up, you need a link).  I happened to notice that they're selling 2(x)ist today and there are some pretty great deals.  Like a 3-pack of long johns for $36 (shown) or a 6-pack of no-show trunks for $36!  But you'll have to act quickly as things at GILT usually fly off the shelves.  Just thought I'd let you know.

Long Johns Compared

The following is another guest review from Nick from Michigan. Since it is winter in most parts of the world, he decided to compare some of his long underwear. His rating scale is out of 5 (not 10).

Under Armour Cold Gear Leggings

-As you can probably tell by the name, these long underwear are performance oriented, and skin tight. I really like wearing these out to jog because they are excellent at retaining heat and moving with me, much like a second skin. I do not recommend wearing these to work or class, because of the fabric texture, they're not exactly the most comfortable thing to sit in for extended periods of time.

Price: $50

American Eagle Long John

-Although discontinued for this season, the AE Long John should be back next winter for a repeat performance. I really liked that they came in different colors, so I picked up a pair in blue. They turn up the fun factor in wearing long underwear. As far as keeping you warm, they do the job, even for extended periods.

Buy: Discontinued for the season (try AE next year)

Joe Boxer Long Underwear

-Finally, a plain white waffle long john that doesn't look like it belongs on an 80 year old. Even though Joe Boxer took a spin on this classic style, the stretchiness of the design feels slightly constrictive when worn under clothing. As sleeping underwear, they're pretty great. You can get them at Kmart in the US, and Sears in Canada. They should still be in stock, or even on clearance as spring collections roll out.

Buy: KMart or Sears brick and mortar stores

C-In2 Long Johns

-As far as casual long underwear goes, C-In2 takes the cake. Although the softness rating is a meager 1 on HisRoom, I would easily rate these a 2 or even 3. They're suitable for just about anything, including extended sitting, sleeping, outdoor activities, etc. One thing I thought was great was the "molded" crotch area. Unlike the other three, C-In2 gives you a little bit more room up front for the jewels.

Price: $27 Currently on Sale: $18

Below, each pair is rated for comfort, style and durability. The "rating" number is from 1 (favorite) to 4 (least favorite).

AE Long Johns on deep discount!

It's still winter and it is just starting to get really cold for those of us who have winter weather. So if you're like me and live where there is snow, you definitely will need to get out the old long johns at least a couple days this season. American Eagle has their long johns on sale for $9.95 (marked down from $19.50), so that's a great deal. But you need to act quickly because they are selling fast. When I was first planning on writing this post they had blue, red, grey, and camo (and that was just a couple days ago). Now they only have red and camo. The red and the camo are available, as of the time of this post, in xsmall/small and x-large/xxlarge. So go check it out now. And stay warm!

Question of the Day: Do you like wearing long johns when it's cold out, or do you just tough it out? How does your underwear wardrobe change to help you survive the cold?

Long Johns

It's that time of year again. Yup you guessed it. It's winter and it's time to pull on your long underwear. But this year instead of dragging out those old union suits like your grandpa used to wear why not treat yourself with some new and improved winter underwear. The men's underwear world has gone through some major innovations recently, and some of those innovations allow you to have warm underwear that still maintains style and doesn't have a lot of bulk to it. So go out and buy yourself some "modernized" long underwear. They can range from 20 to 40 dollars. They are seriously a good investment, especially if you live anywhere where there are white christmases. So treat yourself to some in-style long johns this year and go out and buy a few.
Here's a couple to check out first:
  • C-IN2
  • Unico
  • Hugo Boss
  • 2(x)ist

  • Question of the Day:
Do you wear long underwear in the winter or do you just wear the same things that you wear the rest of the year.
