Bjorn Again - A Review

Brflines is no longer updating his undies status on Twitter, instead he is now documenting his daily underwear on Flickr.  Checkout the sidebar to see his pair of the day!
Bjorn Borg was an iconic Swedish tennis player from the 1970s. And like many professional athletes, once out of the business of playing a sport for a living, Bjorn branched out into the world of fashion. He joins another iconic tennis player who successfully transitioned over to the world of fashion, Henri Lacoste.

True to its origins, Bjorn Borg is sported by a lot of tennis players. As yours truly is an avid tennis fan, I’ve seen several players wearing them including Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra. So on a recent trip to Marshall’s, I saw the green Fun Stretch brief in a medium, I thought “why not?” So I picked them up and twenty minutes later I was at home slipping them on.

Now, I’m normally into briefer cut briefs (low rise or no shows) so I’ll say one thing about the fun stretch brief from Bjorn Borg: it's very full cut. They’re very substantial on the sides and in the rear. I’d say that the fit of these briefs comes much closer to a trunk then they do to a lowrise brief. So if you’re looking for a skimpier cut, I’d steer clear of these.

So I thought I’d get super annoyed by having a bunch of material all over my groinal area. But not really, after I got used to being fully covered, it got very comfortable. The material's a nice combination of the softness of cotton and the stretchiness of just the right amount of lycra to allow give without making the garment feel too synthetic.

I think a garment like the Bjorn Borg stretch fun brief is the perfect bridge for someone looking to transition from boxer briefs or trunks to briefs. The coverage and support approximates that of a brief. I also wore them one day to work and was delighted at the comfort of the garment and its all day wearability. The price point is a little high on these, but you can probably get them on sale.

Am I a Bjorn Again convert to full coverage briefs? Maybe. The fun stretch brief sure has made a strong argument for how much comfort and security a well-made full-coverage garment can provide.

Overall, I bequeath a score of 7.0 to the Bjorn Borg Fun Stretch Brief based on the following criteria:
COOL FACTOR -- 5 (out of 10) – The Euro-ness of the label is cool, for those in the know
WEARABILITY -- 8 (out of 10) – Nice, comfortable garment for all day wear, I wish these were cut briefer though
QUALITY -- 8 (out of 10) – Clean stitching, great fabric.
HOTNESS -- 8 (out of 10) – I still think full coverage = grandpa. So I have to knock them down a little for that. Tear.
VALUE -- 6 (out of 10) – Not super expensive, but they’re not Hanes either.

Bjorn Borg - A Review

Today I'm going to review some Bjorn Borg briefs. Bjorn Borg was a Swedish tennis legend, now after retirement he has focused his attentions on creating a fashion line in which underwear plays a prominent role.

I was sent a pair of his fun stretch briefs in opaline green. These briefs are what I would call basics with some flare. They have modest full coverage but they come in lots of fun colors. These are the kind of briefs that you can wear to the locker room and not feel completely exposed in, but you'll still feel stylish and fashion forward. They fit snugly but still allow for freedom of movement and comfort throughout the day.

One of my favorite parts of these briefs is the attention to detail. The leg holes do not have elastic bands around the edge as many briefs do, but instead have a special stitch to ensure that the legs stay in place and prevent gaping. The briefs are sewn with a five-panel construction with one large panel across the butt, one panel on each side extending to the pouch, and a two-panel pouch design. All the panels are sewn together with a flat stitch in the same color as the fabric to create a smooth appearance and smooth, comfortable feel. Like I mentioned earlier, these are modest briefs and the pouch reflects that. It does not draw attention to your crotch, but it allows enough room so that you fit comfortably.

I find myself using the term 'comfortable' a lot in this review, and these briefs really are all about comfort. They are perfect for sports or everyday wear. They provide the support you need to get through the day and they give you enough coverage so that you stay comfortable and they remain in their proper place all day.

Now the seal on the deal is that these briefs are not just comfortable but they are also stylish. They come in a broad array of bright, fun colors with bold, fun waistbands. The particular pair that I tried was lime (or opaline) green with a black and red logo waistband. But they also come in stunning blue with a green waistband and more neutral colors like black with rainbow waistbands. These are currently on sale at the Bjorn Borg site for $9.99 (USD), although the color I have is no longer available from their site (you can get it at Freshpair, however for $18 USD).

These briefs are the perfect thing to wear when you know you are going to be someplace where your underwear will be seen and you still need to look respectable (like a locker room). They will keep you covered, but still let everyone know that you have style. And for $10 a pair, you really can't beat it.

MY RATING:
Overall, I give the Bjorn Borg briefs a total score of 9 based on the following criteria:
FIT -- 8 (out of 10) - Very modest, full-coverage. Snug, but not too snug.
COMFORT -- 10 (out of 10) - Very comfortable, perfect to wear all day.
STYLE -- 7.5 (out of 10) - Basic, but stylish.
QUALITY -- 10 (out of 10) - Very well made, great attention to detail.
VALUE -- 10 (out of 10) - Seriously, where else can you get such quality briefs for $10?

Bjorn Borg Event

New York - Last night at the Peter Eliot store in Manhattan, New York an event was held to celebrate the launch of the new Bjorn Borg line. The party was a benefit party to raise funds for the Widow's and Children's Fund - an FDNY charity. Firefighters from the 2010 City of the Brave pin-up calendar served as models for the new line (the new calendar goes on sale in August).

Bjorn Borg was a Swedish tennis legend who has now turned to fashion design. So in fitting tennis style the models played table tennis at the event.

The event was a huge success. Especially when store owner Eliot Rabin dropped trou to show off his Bjorn Borg gear to all the guests.

Celebrity Underwear Sighting: Henrik Stenson

Swedish golf star Henrik Stenson was forced to shed his clothes the other day in order to hit the ball out of a muddy water hazard without ruining his clothing. He stripped down to just his boxerbriefs, which are a classic Bjorn Borg trunk (available for purchase here at Dead Good Undies).

"Because of the mud I couldn't really afford to play in any of my clothes as they would have been a real mess down the last six or so holes so I had no option," said Stenson in Florida after the incident.

"I was only wearing two things when I hit the shot, my jocks and my golf glove - that is the only thing that will appear in the picture aside from the golf club - just the way God created me.

"Shirt, trousers, socks, shoes, hat - the lot was off."

Not sure if there are any rules against this behavior, but it's certainly an unorthodox way of playing and definitely got Stenson some attention. Who knows, maybe he'll become the new face of Bjorn Borg.... And who's to say that this won't become the new trend, soccer (football) stars strip to their skivvies all the time!

Björn Borg at Mensunderwear.nl

I have two great new things to tell you about today. The first is fantastic new underwear store that is based in the Netherlands. It is mensunderwear.nl. They offer lots of great brands, including: 2(x)ist, Body Art, Bruno Banani, Calvin Klein, Chevignon, DIM, HOM, Unico, Nikos A., Punto Blanco, Schlesser, Sloggi, and Björn Borg. Out of all of these I am possibly most intrigued by the Björn Borg. I have never actually seen this brand anywhere else, which is probably why it intrigues me the most. It is a really fun and great brand. In the photo you can see the Björn Borg new style boxer. This boxer is really fun and comes in a lot of fun colors and print varieties. I really like the whole Björn Borg collection that is available at Mensunderwear.nl, so check it out now.
