Who’s got money for dik?

This is the second entry in a series of entries from dik founder Marcus:
It’s pretty cliché to say that money makes the world go around, but for anyone who has ever started up their own company, you know that is as true as it gets! We’re no different here at dik, and we’ve been careful with our cash right from the start.

Despite that, there are major expenses you need to incur before you get anywhere close to selling product and recouping costs. Registering the business and doing the trademark search takes money; the lawyer needs to be paid for his work. After that, if you’re like us and place a premium on how you present your company, you need to start thinking about the website. So at that point a web designer comes into play.

And of course there are lots of little things that add up fast; getting a mailbox, getting supplies, registering domains and email addresses and such, designing product, marketing ideas, photoshoots, models and the list goes on. But none of it compares to the manufacturer and their costs (hundreds of thousands as a ball park for minimum orders with the big players). Then of course there’s your marketing plan....

So, what do you do? That’s a lot of capital needed to get going and the average person probably doesn’t have it. Well it’s an interesting experience! Luckily for us, we have a bit of a reprieve because our export guy in China is working hard on getting us payment concessions to make the orders more affordable. But despite that, there are still huge numbers tossed around.

The easiest answer for quick money is find a venture capitalist. But be careful because you are swimming with sharks. No offense to them, because they simply have a job to do, but their goal is to make as much money from your company as quickly as they can. So really take the time to research what all the different options are and what the VC is really asking you to give up. They’ll all want a piece of your company (large percentages, don’t be surprised when they want a 50% stake), so you need to know how much you’re willing to give.

We’re really close to finalizing something. But having said that, if you’re interested in talking to us about opportunities, let’s chat! Because after you’ve secured manufacturing, the cost of marketing is huge. Right now that’s what we’re ironing out. You’ve already seen the fruits of that labour on places such as this blog. However, you’ll be seeing a lot more dik in the near future.

The dik crew here knows exactly what we’re willing to concede to an investor. We know they want to make money. That’s fine, we want to make money off their investment as well. And since getting a loan from a bank for a new company is nearly impossible (given that the company has no credit history – a bit contradictory for those in government saying they want to endorse small business growth), we’ve turned to VC’s.

It’s been a great experience and will allow dik to be what we want it to be. But if I have any advice to give it’s that you should never rush a decision and know exactly what you are willing to sacrifice to reach your goal.

Not your Father's Underwear

Since moving to California in 2001, I have taken noticed of a renaissance of sorts in Design. The revolution of Design has afflicted art, architecture, technology, and fashion. Modern art is seen in common Americana; SHAG. You can find SHAG putting a new fresh look to Pink Panther or see the 60's aesthetics back in vogue in your cocktails. You can read about ecology friendly pre-fab home designs in Dwell. What about modern home kitchens and baths, just check out HGTV. Even your phone is getting into the act with Apple iPhone. So, it's no surprise that underwear has taken a leap in its design and fashion senses. On the personal level, I've acquired a fashion sense that includes Prada, JP Todds, ETRO, and now aussieBum and C-IN2.

Underwear design (if you want to call it that) what used to be a novelty bent on the silly sexy bedroom frolicks, has become ever more forward. Just look at the latest products from aussieBum, C-IN2, Toot, as brands whose designs take into account advancements in prints, fabrics, form, and cut. Cotton mixed with synthetic fabric for stretch and comfort. Low-rise briefs, a perfect corollary to one's Banana Republic or J Crew jeans, are now as 'in' as they are worn 'under' your other designer wear. There are low-rise boxer shorts too to complement your low-rise Prada slacks. And what is this 'Sling' anyway by C-IN2, technology meets form and function is what. Well, you'll have to decide. For me, I have decided that this is an exciting and fascinating time for the vitalization of underwear. There is so much creative energy thrown into this space, evident by an explosion of new makers and designers. Even old traditional names like Fruit of the Loom, Jockey, are competing with the likes of coutour designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and D&G. Unimaginable ten years ago, I now have to decide what underwear to chose to go with my clothes and function for the day.

In post script I ask one final question. Do you still call it "Underwear?" Well, no longer. A new name has been bestowed upon this once hidden layer of clothing that keeps your good clothes from getting soiled. Fashionistas now call it "foundation garment" (as read in WallPaper issue). As the name suggests, underwear is no longer shamefully hidden, but proudly forms the foundation for all your other fashionable layers of clothing. We must all have a hip label for men's new modern Design products.

Underwear Answers (UA): Kilt thong

As you may or may not remember, a while back I started a series on UB called Underwear Answers. The purpose is to answer any questions readers have about underwear. Readers often send me questions via email and this is a good way for my answers to benefit all my readers who may have a similar question. This is the second installment of this series. Please, feel free to send me your questions and I will do my best to answer them.
Here's a question from Ryan:
First off, thank you for a good and useful blog. I am straight, but still enjoy feeling sexy in my underwear, and I appreciate your heads-up on new stuff.

I am getting married in August, and as a little wedding-night joke, I would like to find a kilt thong that I can wear to surprise my bride. Do you guys know of any good ones, and/or how to get one?

My response:
When I first received this question I was not sure what Ryan meant. But after doing a little Googling I found out exactly what he was talking about. I recommended that he check out this kilt thong at Skinz. The kilt thong comes in four different fabrics or you can have them make it from any fabric they have. They have a customer service line that can help you out with any questions. It should be noted that there is no pouch underneath the "kilt" section so it is not a very supportive style. It is simply a twin woven band frame that converges into a thong back. It sells for $19. Now I do not recommend this as every day underwear because it would bunch up under pants and probably would not be very comfortable or supportive. But for a wedding night joke (especially if you are Scottish) it is cute. Ryan contacted me a couple weeks after my response and told me: "I just wanted to share that I received my kilt thong today. It fits well and looks hot....The retailer is very easy to work with, and their stuff looks hot. I probably will order from them again."

So if you have any pressing underwear questions, send me an email ( and I'll answer it on Underwear Answers.

Otter Fashion and American Apparel reviewed

Otter Fashion is an innovative line of clothing founded by Joshua Harrell. The line includes t-shirts, athletic wear, and underwear. Of course since this is an underwear blog I am just going to focus on the underwear.

Otter Fashion underwear is basically American Apparel baby rib briefs with the otter logo screen printed on the front. This in mind, this review is technically a review of American Apparel and Otter Fashion. Otter Fashion offers their briefs in 12 colors. You can purchase the colors individually or in 3-packs (go brights, go deep, or packages that are all the same color) as well as in a passion pack, which is a 9-pack. Also, in the press package they have announced that they are developing a new line of underwear to debut in 2007. Although they started out with T-shirts, I am told that their briefs are now their number one seller.

American Apparel actually offers over 30 colors (31 to be exact) on their website. But the briefs you buy from American Apparel do not have an otter across the pouch. Another thing (besides more colors) that American Apparel offers that Otter Fashion does not is boxerbriefs. So one thing that I would like to see from Otter Fashion is more colors and more than one style of underwear.

Now for the review part. I've gotta say that these are probably the most comfortable briefs I have ever worn. They conform perfectly to my body and they are not too tight or too loose. At first when you see them they look a little odd because when they are not being worn they are very narrow and long, but somehow this design allows them to stretch perfectly to any body. I'm very impressed. The only thing that would be a nice innovation in the fit would be to have a low-rise option as well (although if you ordered a size smaller than your normal size it would probably work as a low-rise brief). Also, the waistband is soft and smooth and you don't even notice it is there. There is a tag on the waistband, but it is so perfectly implemented that you do not feel it at all.

The style of these briefs is very fun. There are so many colors that there is pretty much a color to match any possible outfit you could put together. Every brief has white binding and a white waistband. This adds a fun and retro inspired contrast. I really think that the otter on the front of the otter fashion briefs is cute and is a nice touch. The only thing that I would like to see from otter fashion is more than one otter draw on the front (just like all the unique t-shirt designs they offer).

These briefs are excellent quality and are fairly reasonably priced. You can get a plain pair (with nothing printed on the pouch) at American Apparel for $12, or you can get a 3-pack for $30 (that's $10 a piece). And at Otter Fashion you can get a pair with screen printing on the pouch for $16 or a 3-pack for $32 (that's about $10.66 a piece) or a 9-pack for $90 (that's $10 a piece). So the more you order, the better the bargain.

These colorful briefs are definitely a must-have for every man's underwear drawer. They are a very comfortable staple that can be worn with anything. Whether you buy them printed or plain, they will soon become one of your new favorites.

Overall, I give the Otter Fashion briefs a total score of 9 based on the following criteria:
FIT -- 10 (out of 10)
COMFORT -- 10 (out of 10)
STYLE -- 9.5 (out of 10)
QUALITY -- 9 (out of 10)

New Frank Dandy website and collection...

I've posted about the great new lines from Frank Dandy previously. This fairly new company (founded in 2002) has quickly gained my attention and national attention as well (it was even mentioned in the NY Times article that I just posted about). Anyway, Frank Dandy recently launched a brand new collection for Spring/Summer 2007. And to go along with the new collection there is a new site (and logo). So go ahead and check out the new collection. You can buy the new collection online at International Jock or Stylebird.

Men's Underwear featured in the New York Times...

The New York Times posted a great article about men's underwear entitled "But What if You Get Hit by a Taxi?".

This article features many of our favorite brands from around the underwear world. Including: Ginch Gonch, American Apparel, 2(x)ist, Andrew Christian, Frank Dandy, and more.

So be sure to read through this article. It is very informative and worth a read.

I will study it a little more and later I will post about my opinions on the article.

Complete Gregg collection at Wyzman

The entire new Gregg Homme collection for 2007 is now available at Wyzman. Check it out.

Two New lines from aussieBum

aussieBum has been previewing some of their upcoming lines on their AusLife section. AusLife is basically aussieBum's announcement blog. So be sure to check that out occasionally. Two of these lines that I want to quickly tell you about are the Jungle line and the Manga line. More information after image.

The Jungle line was just announced today. It is basically animal printed undies. The 'Jungle Series' will be a strictly limited release. aussieBum promises that the quality and feel is absolutely amazing. They are created using the world's most luxurious fabric and hand printed in Italy by master printers. There will be four different Jungle inspired designs to help bring out the animal in you. More information after image.
The Manga line was announced April 6 and has been generating quite a bit of buzz already. As you may know, Manga is a style of Japanese art that is presented in graphic novel form. This line takes inspiration from the stylized Manga art and brings the same bold colors and shapes to prints on underwear. It was promised to be availble in a week (and that was on the 6th), but after talking with the people at aussieBum it looks like it will probably take at least two more weeks.

But whenever these come out, these are some fun new lines to be looking forward to in the coming months.

Checkpoint Underwear Update

You may remember my post about a very cool brand of underwear called Checkpoint. Well I am sorry to report that they are no more. But don't fret. It's not as bad as it sounds. What happened is that Checkpoint was approached by lawyers and informed that their name had already been trade-marked. So after much negotiating, Stephane from Checkpoint informs me that "Checkpoint underwear has become CORE-POINT". Well you can imagine what this means in terms of the product. They must completely restart from scratch in developing the elastic waistbands and the packaging. As of my last conversation with Stephane (which was in late March) the rough release is early May. I just thought you might like to know.

3 for 2 at JustHom ends tonight

Sorry for the short notice, but I just wanted to let you know that JustHom is having a 3 for the price of 2 deal on select products. Hurry because this great deal ends tonight.

Ginch Gonch Photo Shoot Video

This video documents the previous photo shoot that Ginch Gonch did. Follow Ginch Gonch and company through their photo shoot in Central America. This should give you a good feel of what type of trip you could win in the Battle of the Briefs.

The New Layout...

As you all have figured out by now, we have a new layout! Look above for a comparison of the before (left) and after (right). But here's the deal. I want to know what you think because I am not done yet. There are three things that I really want your opinion on:
  1. Do you like the current color scheme or would you like a different one? If different, what colors?
  2. Do you like the current header or would you like a graphical header instead?
  3. Do you like the three-column layout or do you prefer the old layout?
Basically I want your opinion on everything regarding the new layout. So please feel free to honestly speak your mind on this. I am open to your thoughts.

Ginch Gonch's Battle of the Briefs 2007

Ginch Gonch has a lot of great stuff going on, there is so much news from them that I'm actually going to have to post each thing in a separate entry (there is no way that it would fit nicely into one). So first up we have Ginch Gonch's second annual battle of the briefs. Here's what they have to say about it:
Ginch Gonch is proud to announce the contest as part of our “WE’RE EVERY-WEAR” campaign. In this year’s Battle of the Briefs, Ginch Gonch is giving you the opportunity to show your instrumental creativity and bold talent as you tear away your armor, fighting only in the flesh, showing your monument wrapped in Ginch Gonch in front of a recognizable city landmark – because “WE’RE EVERY-WEAR”! Okay, we’ll accept your backyard landmark, or comparing your monument with that of your neighbors! BUT…be creative folks, because once again we don’t decide the Battle of the Briefs “wiener”, you do. The first prize is a trip for you and someone you love… Maybe it’s the person that took the photo, or the one that puts you in the “right position” regularly.

You will be traveling VIP with us on our next photo shoot adventure and seeing our 2008 collection firsthand. And we are telling you it’s a full one – hand that is. It is at a highly classified, desirable; and a really, really warm location.

So head on over to Ginch Gonch for the official rules and to submit your entry.

How to get your dik off the ground

Here's the promised post from co-founder of dik Marcus:
Hi there, and welcome from dik. Underwear Blog has graciously offered to let us talk about what it’s like to start a high-end men’s underwear company. In the coming weeks and months, I’ll post every so often with personal updates about our progress.

Ever wanted to start your own underwear company? It’s an exciting process but as cliché as it sounds, it takes a lot of work. And you better be prepared for surprises along the way and don’t set a schedule and expect it to stick. In fact, there’s a bunch of steps you need to complete before you can even start thinking about firm timelines.

We think our idea is pretty clever, and like most clever ideas, it started in a bar, two guys, and a whole bunch of pints. That’s how dik was born. Once we had our ‘concept’ it was all about finding someone to help us create it.

If you’ve never done something like this before, it can be pretty overwhelming. Register the business; find a lawyer first; do a trademark search; create business cards; print business cards; find a web developer; come up with a design concept; find an exporter; etc., etc. The list seems to go on and on, and we haven’t even got to the point where we work on getting a product developed!

My business partner I are very fortunate because we both have the exact same vision for where we want this brand to go. That has been a real blessing because it has given us the faith to trust the other all the time. When you’re starting something like this that’s vital because there are times at the start when decisions need to be made fast that you don’t have time to consult the other (such as my solo trip to China, but that’s a separate post!).

We’re also lucky to have some contacts in the import/export world. It’s a pretty crazy business and having had an expert, who also is a professional colleague to my co-founder prior to this, has been a real blessing. It hasn’t been a smooth ride to-date, but starting the next big brand in men’s underwear isn’t exactly a small goal, so it’s going to take some time and sweat!

Thanks for taking an interest in dik and our journey to market. If there’s anything you’d like to hear about, shoot me a line.

Chief Operation Officer
dik Undergarments Inc.

New Brand coming soon: dik

dik is a new line of men's underwear that will be coming out this summer. You may have noticed the advertisement in the sidebar and wondered what this dik is, well I am going to clue you in a bit on dik. dik Undergarments Inc. boasts on their website that they will be the latest in the high-end men’s undergarment world and that dik underwear will make a statement about you – uncompromising, unrivaled, and the ultimate in sophistication. They plan to do this by offering seven different styles that will be availble in two different colors, black and white. As co-founder Marcus Luft explains:
"We're going to have seven styles of underwear: classic brief, boxer brief, fitted boxer brief, loose boxer, retro boxer, bikini brief, thong. They will be available in both white and black, plain except for the band. the band will have dik stitched into it (black stitching on the white garment, white stitching on the black garment) going around the elastic, 4cm apart. They will be available in four sizes, S, M, L, XL.

We also plan on having two tshirts, crew and vneck, available in white and black also and the same sizes. The tshirts will have no tag on the neck, instead an imprint on the material. The tags will be on side seams, care
instructions on the inside, dik logo on the outside.

Both the underwear and the shirts will be 95% cotton, 5% elastane (spandex)."

As a special feature, Marcus will be cluing UB readers in on what it is like to start a brand of men's underwear. He will be doing this through exclusive entries on UB. The first exclusive entry from Marcus will be appearing tomorrow on UB. You may also have noticed that Marcus has made a few comments on posts on this blog, so search around a little bit to find those.

Also, be sure to check out the dik site. The first 50 people to enter their email address in the mailing list will receive a promotional offer; those within the first month of opening up who purchase from dik up to $49 will receive free shipping; for those ordering $50 or more for their first order, they can select a free garment of their choice along with receiving free shipping.

So remember to stay tuned for Marcus' special entry tomorrow.

New Brand: TAXI

TAXI is a young company specializing in high quality undergarments for men. I believe this is their first line. It is very extensive and incredibly unique. Their website is definitely worth a look, they have so much to offer. They are not availble at many locations yet, but they will be arriving in lots of boutiques shortly. But at the moment you can buy them at Wyzman. The selection at Wyzman does not include the entire line, but it is fairly extensive. I am really liking the looks of this brand. It is just so unique. The fun colors in bold, geometric patterns makes for a great statement that no one else will have.

New Layout!

As you may remember, I put up a post a while back asking what you thought about having a three column layout. I have decided to go with this new layout. It is mostly the same with just another column. All the items that were on the right before are still on the right, with the exception of the store and blog links. Those are on the left now. I will continue to tweak the colors and other behind the scene things in the layout through the next few days. Also, I'm considering changing the top to a graphic banner or some sort of other heading.

But the most important thing is what you think about the layout. So please, comment on this post and let me know what you think of the new layout.

Pre-order Jameswinston and save...

Over the past week I've been hyping the launch of the new Jameswinston Co. line of underwear. I will continue to do so until the launch. If you like what you are seeing, then now is your opportunity to be one of the first to own some of the new line. Pre-order is now open, and if you pre-order you will save 15%! Here's how it works. The pre-order function has not been fully set-up, but Jameswinston is still ready to take our order. More information after the photo.

So here's what you do:
1) Go to the gallery and figure out what you want to order.
2) If you're not totally sure what you want to order or if you want more info, then check out the info page.
3) Now head over to the contact page.
4) Fill in all your info.
5) Now in the "Comments/General Inquiry" section, enter what you want to order. Include style, size, and color.
6) Submit the form
7) Now you are all set and you will be receiving your coupon code by email sometime next week. And your Jameswinstons will arrive sometime soon as well.
*Note: Pre-ordering does not mean you will receive anything. It is not really an order, it is just a way to get a coupon code. I believe you will actually have to go through the order process once the site is all set-up. But it's worth it to get 15% off all new products.

Free Tee at MUS

MensUnderwearStore is giving away a free MUS Logo Muscle Tee with the purchase of any N2N Trainer Pant or Short. Everyone likes free stuff, so head on over to MUS to get a free T-Shirt. The trainer pants and shorts are very nice and will be a nice addition to your workout routine. I realize this really has nothing to do with underwear, but it's still worth a quick mention.

Jameswinston Press Release - April 2007

Jameswinston (Underwear) Co. Ltd – PRESS RELEASE Apr ‘ 07

UK web - based men’s underwear brand Jameswinston Co. is shortly to launch it’s new updated ‘Retro’ Spring/Summer 2007 line. Apart from eye - catching designs (and two further product additions) their impending internet marketing campaign features some of the most innovative creative imagery in an industry notorious for generically marketed product. And alongside recent confirmation of a feature and photoshoot within FHM Magazine UK July ‘07 issue the overall effect threatens to catapult this UK start-up company from cult underwear brand to ‘eyebrow raising’ contender status. All in just over six months into their existence - no mean feat in such a competitive, some would say, crowded market sector.

The new ‘Retro’ range (the word ‘Trunk’ is dropped off the main description) is more contemporary styled than it’s deliberately understated ‘Retro Trunk’ predecessor. The sublime cloth colours palette remains a staple whilst, amongst other facets, the clever use of contrast stitching on the garment achieves a definably individual look. Jameswinston Co. founder Brian James says. ‘ We’ve been through a heavy learning curve since launching because of naivety and inexperience. We brought ‘luxury brand’ quality at a decent price the first time round but we did need a more ‘visual’ product design to qualify as fashion underwear ’.

Unusually for a start -up, Jameswinston Co. garnered wide acclaim for it’s exceptional quality and fit from the off. James agrees ‘ Yeah, people raved about us but unfortunately we didn’t know our market well enough to motivate sufficient numbers to experience it for themselves. We’re at home with our brand now and people will see that in our new direction. James also quickly learnt how large retail really works. ‘It wouldn’t have mattered if we were brilliant from the start. Large retailers are under so much pressure and very ‘risk-adverse’ so frankly weren’t ever going to take an ‘unknown brand’ seriously. Of course, simple business courtesies never go amiss but that’s something for the future’ James smiles ironically, refusing to elaborate further. Instead, he says he’s content to steadily build their profile by trading with high- quality, established e-tailers such as (new variety brand selling ‘partner’ to

It’s on the question of ‘fit’ that James gets animated, citing even further improvement by the advent of their ‘ProFIL Panel ‘ TM (pron. Profile) - a double layered, specially cut, front panel that guarantees to ‘naturally’ accentuate your ‘crown jewels’ without using tricky string gimmicks or cloth attachments to over - egg things. ‘No-one wants to feel insecure about taking off their pants in the throes of passion and we want to heighten the mood - not kill it!‘ laughs James. He explains further ;- ‘The wearer simply ‘adjusts himself ‘ to achieve maximum asset projection and the cut of our panel does the rest. Basically, the guy who’ll love ProFIL Panel TM’ is self-confident, wants to look as impressive as hell, while staying within the limits of human anatomical geometrics…and I’m not a ‘Trekkie’, honestly!‘

Of the two new range additions, both the sexy low - rise fit of the ‘Retro Hipster’ and the forthcoming ‘NEON’ TM ‘clubber’s pant’ include the panel feature. The NEON’ TM is a tight-fit, hipster/brief hybrid in ‘fluorescent bright’ colours complete with unique ‘metallic look’ cloth labels and racy names such as; Panther, Elektra and Zest. It also debunks the notion that bright club - oriented underwear inevitably comes in cheap, sweaty materials by containing the same Cotton / Elastane ® mix as the ‘Retro’. ‘You should be able to mix comfort with style but I guess there’s more money to be made from short-changing the customer. That’s not what we’re about’ says James.

The ‘Retro’ will sell on Jameswinston Co’s website for £13 with the ‘Hipster’ and NEON TM at £11 each. Close inspection of the product makes those prices seem impressive value for money on a product still manufactured in the UK. ‘We just want the world to realise buying that expensive ‘name’ brand doesn’t necessarily equate to better quality than a Primark (Walmart‘s UK equivalent) purchase. As a company we’re producing a very stylish garment without compromising quality for profit.’ James concludes, ‘Hopefully people will see a cool, bloody exciting, individual brand that delivers quality underwear with an incredible fit to style - conscious males everywhere … point blank!’ Confident words indeed, and after seeing the new Jameswinston Co. campaign imagery I‘ve the sneakiest impression more than few us will be agreeing with those sentiments by the end of April.
